Editor-in-Chief for the journal Headache  

Headache, the journal of head and face pain, the peer-reviewed journal of the American Headache Society, is published 10 times a year. Headache is a successful mid-sized, sub-specialty journal renowned for undertaking innovative publishing ideas.

The Editor-in-Chief has ultimate responsibility to advance the journal’s clinical reputation while maintaining its relevance to health care professionals who treat individuals who suffer from headache. The Editor-in-Chief, in addition to providing a cogent scientific vision for the journal, is also the final arbiter of all material published.

The Headache Editor-in-Chief must possess a keen interest in headache medicine and facial pain, as well as the breadth of knowledge to identify new information of relevance to the practicing clinician and researcher. By working alongside and receiving direction from the editorial office staff, the Editor-in-Chief must also be familiar with the latest trends in journal publishing. 

As set by the Rules & Regulations of the Society, the Editor-in-Chief is appointed by the President with approval of a majority vote of the Board. The term of office is four years. With the approval of the Board of Directors and the President, the Editor-in-Chief may be reappointed for one additional four-year term (for a total of 8 years).

The Board upon the recommendation of the Publication Committee may remove the Editor-in-Chief for cause.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Performs medical oversight of content and substantive editing.
  • Directs and holds ultimate responsibility for the peer review process.
  • Sets minimum quality thresholds for publication while providing a supportive environment for submitting authors. The Editor-in-Chief is also responsible for ensuring the Editorial Board understands such thresholds.
  • Commissioning content in areas of growing interest.
  • Work collaboratively with the journal’s Online Editor to ensure that the journal is innovative in its presentation of content online.
  • Upholding the ethical standards as outlined within the AHS Publication Ethics Guidelines.
  • Actively promote and support Headache’s reporting standards policy (the use of reporting guidelines such as CONSORT, STROBE, etc.).
  • Identify submissions, which may be of interest to the lay public, for PR consideration by the publisher’s marketing department.
  • Recruit and manage the journal’s Editorial Board, recommending new members to the Board of Directors via the Publication Committee.
  • Maintain a collaborative relationship with the Managing Editor.
  • Actively participate on the Society’s Publications Committee except when it is in Executive Session.
  • Periodically work with the Managing Editor to offer educational courses on writing and peer review at AHS meetings.
  • As set by the Society’s Rules & Regulations, the Editor-in-Chief serves as a member of the Board of Directors (ex officio, without vote).

Required:

  • MD or DO degree with extensive headache medicine experience.
  • Working knowledge of editorial processes.
  • Become proficient with the ScholarOne online submission and review system. The Editor will be required to use the system independently to perform various tasks such as decision-making and article assignment to members of the Editorial Board.
  • The Editor-in-Chief must be continually accessible to perform responsibilities to avoid delays in the peer review process.
